ICEA Chess @ Gardena: Gardena’s Youth Shine at ICEA Chess Tournament

On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the Nakaoka Community Center in Gardena transformed into a hub of strategic excitement as young minds from across the region gathered for the ICEA Chess @ Gardena Tournament. This free, non-rated scholastic event, proudly sponsored by the City of Gardena, welcomed K–12 students to engage in friendly yet competitive matches, fostering both community spirit and intellectual growth.

A Day of Strategy and Sportsmanship

The Gardena Youth Chess Tournament is an annual event sponsored by the City of Gardena, aimed at promoting critical thinking, patience, and sportsmanship among youth through the timeless game of chess.

Participants were divided into three sections — Grades K–2, Grades 3–5, and Grades 6–12 — based on their school grade, ensuring fair and engaging matches for all.

Each young competitor received a medal in recognition of their participation, while the top three players in each section were awarded gift cards and certificates to honor their exceptional skills and dedication.

Standout Performances

The tournament not only showcased individual talents but also highlighted the importance of community support and sportsmanship. Families, friends, and chess enthusiasts filled the venue with encouragement and energy, creating a warm and inspiring atmosphere.

The event attracted approximately 70 sign-ups, drawing players not only from Gardena but also from neighboring cities, making it a vibrant regional gathering.

All winners were determined through thrilling tiebreaks, reflecting the competitive spirit and high level of play.

  • Grade 6–12 Section:
    • Sai Mahika Chenna, an 8th grader from Bert Lynn Middle School in Torrance, claimed 1st place with an impressive 6-0 record (even after missing the final round, she prevailed over Scott Le by tiebreak).
  • Grade 3–5 Section:
    • Lucas Ni Rochelli, a 3rd grader from Chadwick School in Palos Verdes Peninsula, earned 1st place by winning a tiebreak against Sai Anirud Chenna from Towers Elementary School in Torrance.
  • Grade K–2 Section:
    • Yash Chawla, a local standout, secured 1st place by tiebreak against Evan So from Rosa Parks Elementary in Lynwood.

Community Engagement and Future Opportunities

The City of Gardena’s sponsorship reaffirmed its commitment to youth development and educational excellence.

Beyond the competition, the tournament served as a celebration of community, resilience, and the pursuit of intellectual growth.

As players reflect on their games and experiences, Gardena and ICEA Chess look forward to hosting more events that continue to challenge, inspire, and unite young minds.
